Make NVI Data Work for You!

Camille is a support group leader at a nonprofit who works in her neighborhood to help moms prepare for new babies and support them with their breastfeeding journey. She heard that only two thirds of mothers received adequate prenatal care.
I don’t know enough about the people in our neighborhood.

Find Data!

Camille navigates to the website nvidetroit.org, and clicks on Get Data

She finds a map that allows her to look at a geography that covers her neighborhood.

  • 39% Renter-occupied households spend less than 30% of income on housing

  • 63% Births where the mother received adequate prenatal care

Camille finds the indicator about prenatal care and confirms only 63% of mothers received adequate care. She begins to make a list about the barriers that might be facing residents in her neighborhood:

  • 69% Have not had transportation prevent them from working, attending appointments, or other daily living activities
  • 67% Have a savings account in a bank or credit union
  • 57% Have not struggled to get healthcare due to financial hardship
  • 26% Are satisfied with access to health-related amenities in their neighborhood have lived in the City for at least six years
  • 44% Are able to pay their bills

Act On It!

Camille reflects on her own challenges accessing medical care when she was pregnant with her youngest, especially finding childcare and figuring out how to pay the delivery bill. She decides to ask mothers to share their stories in the next meeting.

With those stories to highlight the real impacts of the data, she brings the information to the nonprofit’s board of directors with a plan to build out a network of people who are willing to provide rides and childcare for pregnant mothers accessing medical care.

I struggled to find childcare during my last pregnancy

Dive Deeper

Camille also notices a deep dive section on the NVI website, so she requests an account to learn more about access to health-related amenities.

She finds more people are struggling with access to mental health services than medical care. She makes sure the other support group leaders know this statistic so they can all communicate the importance of these groups for new moms.
